I’m back I guess
It’s been a heck of a long time since I’ve popped in here. When quarantine started, I had a hard time writing. Everything was sad and scary and the thought of writing about anything that mattered at the time was just too much for me, so I avoided it. I always planned on coming back when I was less frustrated with the situation, but if you’re reading this in July of 2020, I think it’s pretty clear that things aren’t exactly getting better any time soon in the US.
As a white woman, my opinions and hot takes on many current events aren’t important right now. Now is the time to listen to and amplify black voices, to support black communities, and to make a real effort to fight along with them. That said, I haven’t felt comfortable using my blog to talk about issues that I have no business talking about – I have never experienced racism and I never will. I’m not the one to listen to right now and I have no right to pretend otherwise.
The only place to find me online recently has been twitter. I’ve been trying to RT as many things as I can, donate when possible, and learn as much as possible from black writers and activists. I’ve stayed quiet here, unsure when the right time to come back would be. There probably is no right time, so at some point I just gotta jump back in.
The protests are still going on and the fight is nowhere near over. But unfortunately, day by day, there’s less news coverage and trends on twitter. This isn’t the kind of thing that you can be “all in” for two weeks and then move on from. Things aren’t magically fixed when a couple bad cops get charged (not even convicted yet!) or when a few street names get changed or after everyone spammed instagram with black squares.
Black lives matter. Black lives more than matter, they are important, cherished, needed. If you can’t protest – that’s okay! There are other ways to help, so please do your part. Please check out the links below for ways to help out from home, things like donating, signing petitions, and educating yourself. And if you have any resources you would like to add – please let me know! I’ll update this post as needed.
That’s all I got for right now. I didn’t feel comfortable returning to my usual kind of posts without first acknowledging the rampant racism and police brutality in this country and showing my support for Black Lives Matter. I’ll be back, I don’t know when exactly, but hopefully soon. Until then – stay safe, be kind, and don’t be a racist asshole.
