My family has gone through some pretty huge life changes this year. We packed up and moved into a small apartment. It’s a long story and not one that I really feel comfortable sharing the details of on my blog, but it was a big deal.

We had already left my mom’s entire side of the family behind when we moved from Pennsylvania to Florida in 2004. With this move, we basically lost another family – my stepdads (unofficially? but basically his role nonetheless).

So, long story short, this will be my little family’s first time celebrating Christmas alone – just the three of us. It’s alright because we still have each other, a place to live, food on our table, and we can still have an amazing Christmas together. With or without the big family gathering!

With everything so different in our lives now, I think it’s even more important to continue on our favorite holiday traditions. So, I thought I’d share a few of them with you all!

Getting a new ornament

Ever since I was a kid, my brother and I have gotten a new ornament to hang on the tree each year. Such a small little tradition, but one of my very favorites. We have such a mismatched eclectic assortment now, and even though it can make the tree look a tiny bit tacky, I love it. This year I found this gem at Target, so of course, it had to be my 2017 choice!

Baking cookies

I mean, I guess this is pretty standard. It’s not December without sugar, peanut butter, and (chipless) chocolate chip cookies! Yeah, you read that right. We make chocolate chip cookies and leave out the chips. It’s delicious. Let me know what your favorite Christmas cookie is!!

Building a gingerbread house

Again, standard. We usually go to Ikea around my moms birthday, and we get our gingerbread house there. I don’t know why but it just became a thing. This year we never made it to Ikea, so we got a kit at Target. It felt pretty wrong, too. Like a betrayal of our favorite Swedish gingerbread folks.

Anyway, despite our best efforts, that house was never meant to be built. The frosting just soaked into the cookie and it kept collapsing. We kind of gave up, but we still had fun trying! Normally our houses are banging, though. Like, look at this. It could be on HGTV.

New calendars and PJ’s

There are two gifts that we always get. We always get new PJ’s (or at least, I, the PJ enthusiast, do) to wear Christmas eve night/Christmas morning. The second is a new calendar. It’s always wrapped up and signed by our cat. Such a dorky little thing, but I can’t wait to see which one my little puff ball Penelope picked this year!

Going to see the park lit up

I’ve mentioned this one before, but it’s magical as heck and one of my very favorite traditions. Either Christmas Eve or Christmas, we head over to the park to watch the lights dance and listen to the happy, festive music.

I’m so grateful for my mom and my brother, and I know that while our holiday might be a little lonelier than we’re used to, it’s still going to be amazing. I hope you and yours are happy and having a great week with good food, lots of laughter, and all your favorite things.

What’s your favorite family tradition?!
