Improving your health and wellbeing one step at a time

Your health and wellbeing are important, but how well do you really take care of yourself? If you lack energy, feel a bit sluggish or just crappy overall – you might have some work to do.

There isn’t one solution for improving your health and wellbeing; it’s a bunch of seemingly little things. It’s like a puzzle, just take it one piece at a time and they’ll come together to help you feel better in the long run

Get more sleep

Sleep is one of the most important factors for overall physical and mental health. When your body doesn’t get enough sleep, you can end up tired and frustrated – you might even end up with bad headaches or nausea. That’s always a huge issue for me if I don’t get enough sleep, and it makes a morning shift miserable. Try to aim for eight hours’ sleep a night, and if you do find that you struggle with that – try some proven tips to help you sleep better.

Be kinder to yourself

It’s easy to be hard on yourself. Worrying about how you look, how well you’re doing at school or your job and comparing yourself to others can all have an effect on your mental health. If you’re showing any of these signs of not loving yourself as much as you should, then you need to start showing a bit of self-love. Give yourself compliments and celebrate your successes. Treat yourself now and then to improve your self-esteem and keep your stresses as low as possible. The world is hard enough on us, we don’t need to be making it harder on ourselves!

Eat healthy foods

You know your body better than anyone else, and it’s going to let you know when something isn’t right. Eat food that makes you feel good, even if that means you need to take a little more time to plan out your meals rather than grabbing something quick and easy. It might seem like healthy eating is a chore or is expensive, but with the right planning, you can start changing your eating habits for the better.

Drink more water

It’s easy to forget to drink more water, but it really is just as important as everyone says. Drinking water will help you avoid headaches from dehydration, which believe me, really put a damper on your day. It’s great for your skin, it can help you feel fuller, and it helps you concentrate throughout the day better. Set a reminder on your phone, make a tick mark in your planner each time you have a glass, or download an app to help you get in the habit of staying hydrated.

Keep up with medical appointments

Your regular medical checkups are important, and if you have regular needs and medication – it’s really important to get to your appointments. Healthcare can be expensive, so look for solutions in your area like CBD Medical Centre to give you reliable treatment you can afford. From dentist appointments to vaccinations, you can help yourself by making regular appointments. Write your appointments in your planner or on your phone to stay on top of things. I get it, doctors appointments are no fun, but you’re important and so is your health!

Get outside

Spending time at home relaxing and watching Netflix is great, but it is possible to have too much of a good thing. If you’re introverted or simply enjoy spending time at home, it can be really hard to force yourself up and outside. Spending time outside has many proven benefits, including being good for your immune system and providing you with energy. Even if you just head out for a little bit to go to the store or go around the block, it’ll do you some good to get out and feel the sunshine and fresh air.

Enjoy some more ‘me time’

If you’re always working and spending your time doing chores, etc., you’re going to burn out. Some chill out time is important to give you some headspace and simply to let your mind focus and relax for a bit. Spend time doing something that you enjoy doing, or take a bath – a bit of pampering will work wonders for your energy levels.

Take a break from social media

Social media makes us all feel the pressure to be perfect, so if you feel this way, you’re not alone. It can be damaging to your mental health, making you feel like you always need to compare yourself to others. Many people have a love/hate relationship with social media, and taking a break from it could surprise you. If you want to experience the potential benefits of switching off your social media, why not give it a try this weekend and see the difference it could make to your confidence. You don’t need to give it up permanently, but you’re also not obligated to keep something in your life if it no longer makes you feel good.

Surround yourself with people who make you happy

The people you spend time with have a big impact on your emotions and behavior. Someone else’s negativity could rub off on you after a while. On the flip side, spending time with happy people can leave you feeling more positive. Learn to say no to invitations that you don’t want to accept and start doing more with the people you like. Spend time creating some good memories and avoid situations that make you uncomfortable or nervous.


Laughing is good for you, there’s no denying it. When you laugh, your body produces endorphins – the feel-good hormone. These endorphins can help relax you and ease pain, and it costs nothing to laugh. What makes you laugh? If it’s a certain type of movie or TV show, make sure you get a regular hit to cheer yourself up and provide you with those mood-boosting hormones.

Improving your health and wellbeing can take work, but it’s worth it to improve both your physical and mental health. Spend some time working out the different steps you can take to improve your overall health and start doing it. Developing better habits will help you more than you realize, so make your health a priority and start taking care of yourself.
