My life at the moment: I adopted a kitten!
If you follow me on Instagram (which you should!), then you will have already seen my fun little surprise:
I adopted a kitten this week!
For as long as my family has had cats, which has been since I was 7, we’ve always had two. But Penelope has been flying solo for about a year and a half. She was obsessed with my old cat and has always seemed like she enjoys being around other animals.
Over the past few months, we’ve been considering adopting another cat more and more. We’d been creeping through the different shelters near us online and showing each other pictures. It’s as fun as it is depressing, looking at adoptable cats. Petition for all animals to have loving homes, snuggles, and treats every single day. And for them to live forever. That sounds reasonable, right?
So, anyway, I had to have a doctors appointment a few weeks ago to get paperwork signed so I can get a new wheelchair (more on that soon!). While we were there, we asked about the process for getting an emotional support animal to help out with my anxiety/depression and left with a letter authorizing us to get one!
We kept checking with the shelters until we found one that seemed like it might be a good fit. On Monday we headed over to meet one! She was an all grey cat named Evi, but after we met her it just didn’t feel right. She wasn’t as social as we were told she would be, and she smacked my mom and bit my brother. I’m sure she was just nervous, but we weren’t sure she’d be a good pal for Penny. Sidenote, I checked on her throughout the week and she got adopted by someone! I’m so happy she got a home, too.
We really wanted a kitten that would hopefully be open to snuggling but still playful since Penny used to love romping around with our other cat. As we were wandering through the room of cats, we met a lil babe with the worst name I’ve ever seen for a cat – Beauty Girl.
I’m sorry, that is terrible. I don’t know who chose it but I’m offended on her behalf.
When we were meeting her she was sweet and wanted attention. She seemed playful but not too hyper. At 5 months, she was old enough to know her personality but still a baby. I was a little unsure until the volunteer read off what her previous owners said about her – that she loves to be held and sleep with you. Boom. We all knew she was coming home with us in that moment.
Beauty Girl now goes by Periwinkle, or Peri for short!
Currently, she’s exiled to my brother, Kevin’s room. She’s also in a little onsie made from a sock so she can’t mess with her incision while it heals. It’s been a really nice alternative to forcing her to wear a cone of shame for two weeks. We’re letting her and Penny sniff each other through the door for a while, and Peri has seen Penny a few times through her carrier. Penny seems a little nervous and curious, while Peri has been hissing every time she comes near. Not an ideal reaction, but they both just need some time.
She can’t get enough attention ever. As soon as you come in the room, she’s meowing and on you rubbing her face all over you. She’s literally always purring and kneading on something – or making biscuits/baking bread as we like to call it. Like the cutest lil baker you ever saw. If you spend 5 minutes with her, it’s impossible not to fall in love. I just can’t wait for her and Penny to get along so she can hang out with us wherever we are instead of having to invade Kevin’s room every time I want a cuddle!
I think she’s going to make an amazing emotional support animal, not just for me, but for the entire family. We’re all so excited to have a second cat in the house again and we can’t wait to watch her grow up with Penelope! I hope you’re all stoked to see kitten updates because there will be many.
